Dr Joy Shome

Joy is a consultant interventional cardiologist at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. Teaching has always been a passion for him, with excellent feedback from various stints throughout his junior doctor years. He grew up in north east India. Ranked 1st in his province in the ICSE (O Level equivalent) examination, he was successful in a very competitive all India medical entrance examination and completed his MBBS degree from the prestigious Kasturba Medical College, Manipal University, India, with First Class with Distinction, securing the 1st rank in the Final MBBS Part 1 examination. Thereafter, he passed the PLAB exam, and moved to the UK.

During his foundation and core medical training in Liverpool and Kent, whilst obtaining his MRCP he was also an RCP associate tutor and organized CMT teaching. Subsequently, he completed a Teaching Fellowship (Specialist Registrar grade) in Cardiology at the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough where he formally taught Years 3 and 5 Newcastle University medical students and acquired a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education from Newcastle University. He completed general and interventional cardiology training in the Northern Deanery in 2019, interspersed with a clinical research fellowship in cardiovascular MRI at St. Thomas’ Hospital, London. His interests are to pursue further advanced training and research in structural heart disease intervention and complex high- risk indicated procedures (CHIP) intervention. Outside work he likes to spend time with his family and is an avid Liverpool Football Club fan.
